Those based on a personal computer (PC) platform
and those that are made from proprietary hardware.
The features and functions of voice processing are
similar on either kind of system.
The traditional difference between these types of
systems has been the ability to handle large capacity
call processing needs, such as is required for a company
with 1,00 or more employees. Stand-alone systems have
been better suited to work in larger environments
because of their processing power and hardware configurations.
This has become less of an issue today since PC technology
has started to develop the processing power to handle
large applications and can be configured or networked
to handle a high number of users. PC systems also
benefit from the ongoing research and development
of the entire PC industry and are generally less expensive
to purchase and service.
Good and bad systems exist in both categories. The
most important aspect to consider is will the system
perform the functions your company needs.
